Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (MGIB-AD)

The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty provides education benefits to veterans and servicemembers who have at least two years of active duty. Benefits are generally payable for 10 years following release from honorable active duty. Assistance may be used for:

  • a college degree
  • certificate programs
  • technical or vocational courses
  • flight training
  • apprenticeship
  • on-the-job training
  • high tech training
  • licensing and certification tests
  • entrepreneurship training
  • certain entrance exams
  • correspondence courses

The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty is available to those who were honorably discharged, have a high school diploma or GED and meet requirements outlined by the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you are eligible, you may receive up to 36 months of education benefits, which is paid to you based on the type of training you take, length of your service, your category, any college fund eligibility, and if you contributed to the $600 Buy-Up Program. If you made contributions to the $600 Buy-Up Program during active duty then you may receive increased monthly benefits.

Read about Categories I-IV of eligibility for MGIB-AD here by visiting the VA website at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/mgib_ad.asp. You may also speak with one of CTU’s dedicated military benefit specialists.
