Tips to Get Through the Worst Session Ever
By Gregory Ramsey, Student Advisor
When it rains, it pours; or so the old saying goes. I think every one of us experiences this at some point in our lives. One thing goes wrong, and it dominoes, affecting every aspect of your life until it feels like there’s more wrong than right. Even worse is when this gets in the way of your schooling, as it does for many students. After all, it does take time to earn a degree, and there’s no telling what can come up over the years that you are in school. Hopefully you will never have this experience while working towards your degree, but in case you do, it is important to know the right steps to take and what support is available for you.
One thing that may help is to focus in even more on your schooling. Let’s face it, students enroll in a degree program for one reason: to earn a degree, and this is a positive thing. So even when it seems like your life has spun out of control, sometimes focusing on the positive and remembering your goals can help turn the tide of a bad moment in your life. But sometimes it’s not that simple. Sometimes your personal life has gotten so out of control, that it feels like you cannot even think about school until things calm down. Certainly health and family come first, but there are things you can do to alleviate the stress and make it through the session.
First, you can reach out to your professors. They may be able to make an arrangement with you concerning your assignments, or offer suggestions to make it through the class. Second, you can prioritize the assignments. Although it is not ideal, it is better to pass a class with a poor grade than to fail it, so there may be a situation where it is better to accept a late penalty than to fail a class or assignment. Lastly, it is important to remember to give Student Advising a call when issues arise (1-866-813-1836). We have a lot of tips and tricks, along with good practical advice we can offer to help you make it through a session, even when everything else is going badly in your life. So in the case that things go badly for a session or two, try to focus on the good and explore youroptions. There are always steps to take to have school be on the positive column in your life.
