CTU 2016 Graduation Speaker Steve PembertonGraduation is an exciting time of year for students, staff, faculty, and alumni alike. This year’s graduation events will be held July 29th-30th at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.

Colorado Technical University is excited to have Steve Pemberton as this year’s commencement speaker. Pemberton is the Vice-President, Diversity and Inclusion and Global Chief Diversity Officer for Walgreens.

Pemberton is a moving speaker – and one CTU is honored to have anchor Graduation 2016.

Meet Steve Pemberton

In addition to his role with Walgreens, Steve Pemberton is also an author: His memoir, A Chance in the World: An Orphan Boy, a Mysterious Past, and How He Found a Place Called Home, was published by Harper Collins in 2012. It’s through A Chance in the World that Pemberton emerges as an inspiring executive.

In A Chance in the World, Pemberton charts the journey of his success. It’s a journey that begins in the unlikeliest of places – with Pemberton, in early childhood, as a ward of the state. Described by one caretaker as a boy who would not have “a chance in the world,” Pemberton defied all odds by navigating the foster care system to achieve personal and professional success.

In his commencement address to CTU graduates, CTU graduates can expect to learn more about Pemberton’s past and how it has informed his future.

Pemberton was the first person in Walgreens’ history to hold the role of Divisional Vice-President, Chief Diversity Officer. He previously served as Chief Diversity Officer of Monster Worldwide and currently serves on several boards including The New Yorkers for Children and UCAN in order to support and inspire those raised in similar circumstances to his own. He also established The Pemberton Fund for the Future to assist children aging out of the foster care system.

In 2015, he was awarded the prestigious Horizon Award by the United States Congress; this award is given to individuals in the private sector who demonstrate the ability to expand opportunities for all Americans and set a positive example for young people.

A graduate of Boston College, Pemberton currently resides in Chicago with his wife Tonya and their three children, Quinn, Vaughn, and Kennedy.
