Mobile Professional Proves Road Warriors Can Go to College

CTU Student Ricky BanksAs the Operational Excellence manager for his company, first-time college student Ricky Banks spends more than 50 percent of his job on the road. “At this juncture in my career, it is very hectic,” says Ricky.

Over the last 27 years, Ricky has built his career from the ground up. Ricky started on the production floor and worked his way to middle management. He managed production, quality and environmental departments before settling into his current specialty in Lean Six Sigma and process improvement.

Today, Ricky works in the company’s corporate office, teaching and coaching young professionals. As the organization’s culture evolves and improvements are made in the way they do business, Ricky’s role teaching and coaching is an important one. His leadership role requires travel, but despite spending time away from his home in Scottsboro, Alabama, Ricky is earning his college degree. He is currently working toward a bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in project management at Colorado Technical University.

Ricky discovered CTU while browsing online and was intrigued. “I asked for information from multiple colleges,” he says, “but none compared to the responsiveness of CTU. That sealed my decision.”

Once enrolled, Ricky was introduced to CTU’s Fast Track™, exams designed to test students’ knowledge and provide an opportunity to earn credit for what they already know. Since he had never attended college, Ricky didn’t have college credit to apply toward his degree program, but with 27 years of work experience, he was able to earn credit through Fast Track™. “Fast Track™ allowed me to test my knowledge on subjects prior to taking the courses,” he explains, “I was able to pass 12 Fast Track™ exams, which saved me at least 50 hours of classroom time.”

Since most of his homework is completed from hotel rooms, away from the normalcy of his home and family, Ricky appreciated the ability to take the Fast Track™ exams on his own time. He also liked the use of Intellipath™, CTU’s personalized learning system that leverages adaptive learning technology to tailor course materials around what students already know. “It was nice to have the learning aligned with my existing knowledge, so I wasn’t learning about a subject that I’ve already mastered,” he says. “Fast Track™ and Intellipath™, in my opinion, have revolutionized online learning."

Thanks to Fast Track™, Ricky says he will graduate sooner than he initially expected. Plus, with the time and money saved, he was recently able to say to his wife, “Honey, we’re going to Mexico!” Next year, he’ll hit the road again, but this time with his wife to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

And there’s more good news. Apparently, being a college student is contagious. Ricky’s daughter, a military spouse, saw how her father leveraged technology and the mobility of CTU’s degree programs, which inspired her to become a CTU student as well.

The ability to reduce time in school and/or reduce tuition depends on the number of Fast Track™ courses successfully passed. Fast Track™ program credits are unlikely to transfer. Not all programs are eligible for possible 30% reduction in time and money.
