The ability to take classes and complete coursework according to your own schedule can be the difference between going back to school to pursue a degree—or not.

And the potential advantages of online courses don't stop there. In addition to schedule flexibility, the online class format makes it possible to attend a school that is geographically distant from where you live without having to upend your life and move. The self-directed nature of online learning can help you to further develop various soft skills, such as time management, goal-setting and professional “netiquette” (online etiquette). And the online learning format may also provide an opportunity for more personalized or tailored learning.

These potential benefits of online education are certainly appealing. But if you're new to distance learning, you may have questions about how online classes work in practice, and we are here to try and help answer those questions. We begin our exploration of this topic with an overview of the main differences between online vs. in-person classes.

Online vs. In-Person Classes: Main Differences

There are a few basic differences with online classes vs. in-person classes.

Convenience

The most obvious difference between online and in-person classes is that online classes do not require you to be physically present in the room where the instructor is teaching. While an on-campus student has to walk or otherwise commute to the lecture hall or other building, an online student simply needs to be connected to the internet and log in. Or, where attending the school of your choice used to mean potentially having to move across state or across the country, the distance learning format has effectively removed that geographic barrier, allowing you to remain at home, wherever home is.

Flexibility

Relatedly, while an in-person class will require you to show up at a set time, CTU online degree programs allow students to watch pre-recorded lectures at a time that is convenient for them. While there may be opportunities to log in and view a live lecture, lectures are typically pre-recorded and made available through an institution’s website or app.

Social Environment

Another difference in online vs. in-person classes is the social environment. In a traditional class setting, students are sitting together in real time, asking questions of each other or of the instructor, face to face. But in online classes, particularly with pre-recorded ones, discussion boards and live chats replace face-to-face discussions. And the great thing about live chats is that, even if you miss one, you can still access it through a live chat archive and listen to it at your convenience.

Skill Development

Because there is no obligation to be in a set classroom at a set time, online learners have to be organized and self-motivated to stay on top of their education. But online learning provides an opportunity to hone your time-management and prioritization skills. You the student are given the freedom—and the responsibility—to manage your attendance and timely submission of coursework. The rise of mobile apps, such as the CTU Mobile app, has helped to make staying on top of online courses, assignments and grades easier.

Are Online Classes Easier or Harder Than In-Person Classes?

Online classes are not necessarily better than in-person classes, nor are online classes easier or harder than in-person classes. Online degree programs are designed to be rigorous and offer clear learning outcomes, just as traditional degree programs are.

With that said, certain aspects of online classes may be easier or harder vs. in-person classes, depending on the individual. For example, some students may have concerns about the flexible nature of online courses—these students may be motivated by strict in-person attendance rules and wonder about their ability to make time to view lectures at their convenience. On the flip side, other students may struggle with making it to an in-person class on time because of work or family obligations—or even because of traffic—and are motivated by the flexibility and freedom of catching up on classes while they are “on the go.”

Moreover, some students may not be entirely comfortable with in-person interactions. Such students may find online classes are easier in this respect and thrive in the virtual environment. Collaborating via live chat or posting to discussion boards may eliminate some of the social stress they feel and allow them to focus on understanding the content of the course. Meanwhile, students who prefer the real-time feedback from or collaboration with their peers may miss the face-to-face aspect of traditional classes, but live chat opportunities can help to fill in this gap.

Four Potential Advantages of Online Courses

Several of the main differences between online and in-person courses may also double as advantages of online courses. Here are four benefits of an online education:

1. Flexible Learning

Pursuing a degree involves a significant time commitment, and the flexible online learning format can make it easier to fit school into your life. Being able to catch up on lessons and complete your coursework during your downtime—i.e., when you are not working or taking care of existing personal obligations—is a benefit of online learning that could be the difference between earning a degree or not. Being in control of your own schedule, even if that means studying on your lunch break or after your kids are in bed, is an invaluable advantage of flexible online courses for many busy adults.

2. Contribute to Online Class Discussions from Anywhere

Class discussions are facilitated by online discussion boards and live chats rather than through face-to-face interactions. Commuting to work? On a lunch break? On vacation? If it doesn’t matter to you that you’re not at home, then it doesn’t matter—if you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can participate in class discussions. Another potential advantage of online class discussion boards and live chats is that these technologies can help to reduce any social anxiety a student may have about speaking up in class—students can share their thoughts and ask questions without having all eyes in the room turned on them.

3. Accessibility of Online Course Materials

Online courses often have an online archive from which you can access course materials. In addition to lectures and e-textbooks, you may be able to access past assignments, worksheets, reading materials and even instructor feedback by searching a course’s archive. Using CTU Mobile or the Virtual Campus, you also have the ability not only to access online course materials but also to submit coursework, e.g., to complete intellipath® assignments, or upload individual projects.

4. Personalized Learning Experience

Rather than promoting a one-size-fits-all learning experience, online courses have the potential to offer a more personalized learning experience. CTU intellipath® is an adaptive learning technology that helps to do just that. With intellipath®, a student answers a series of questions, and based on those answers, the program is able to recognize what the student already knows and what that student is ready to learn. CTU intellipath® then tailors the student’s online course materials accordingly, ultimately resulting in the student spending less time on existing knowledge and more time on new content. Students with substantial professional or life experience may find intellipath® to be particularly beneficial, as it offers a way to leverage that experience to potentially save time on studying.

How Do Online Classes Work?: What to Expect

In many ways, taking online classes is similar to taking traditional classes, minus the in-person element, of course.

You still have to attend class. While some online degree programs may require you to log in and view live lectures, others will not. When you pursue an online degree program at CTU, you can watch pre-recorded lectures at a time that is convenient for you.

You still have assignment deadlines. Just because online learning is largely independent doesn’t mean that deadlines don’t exist—they do. Developing strong time-management skills as an online student is a must. Enabling app push notifications, keeping your calendar updated, and planning out and sticking to your study/coursework schedule will help you to be successful in your program.

You still have to participate. Just because you are not physically sitting in a classroom among your peers does not mean that you can’t communicate with them. Live chat makes it possible to talk to your peers in real time. And online discussion boards are a good way to share thoughts and ask questions so that fellow classmates can respond to at their convenience. Both live chat and discussion board participation may even be a mandatory course component.

You can still speak with your instructor… but instead of raising your hand in a lecture hall, you will reach out to them via an app or online portal.

Tips for Taking Online Classes at CTU

Now that you have a better idea of the potential benefits of an online education as well as how online classes work, you might be interested in a few general tips for taking online classes, most of which also apply to traditional in-person classes.

Don’t skip classes. Look at your weekly schedule in advance, and set aside time to attend your lecture.

Practice good study habits. For example, don’t procrastinate, and try to set aside time for your studies every day. Remember: how you access online classes—whether on your smartphone, tablet or laptop—is up to you. These portable devices can be great for catching up on lectures or live chat archives while on the go. But when it comes to completing assignments or studying content, staying focused is key. Ideally, try to seek out study spaces where distractions are minimal and you can fully concentrate.

Engage with your classmates. For online classes, this means communicating via live chats and discussion boards, at a minimum. But you might also consider other potential methods of communication, e.g., email, Zoom, FaceTime or WhatsApp.

Use CTU Mobile to help you manage your time and your workload. The app can send you notifications about upcoming assignment deadlines, and you can even add reminders to your device’s calendar from within the app. CTU Mobile can also help you keep track of your grades, store your contacts (instructors, Student Success Coach, etc.) and upload documents with ease.

Stay positive. Going back to school is a significant time and financial investment, regardless of whether you go the distance-learning or in-person route. If you ever start to feel overwhelmed, taking small steps can make a big difference. Sometimes, taking small steps might mean taking literal steps, i.e., going for a walk to help calm your mind. But it could also mean making an appointment with an instructor or Student Success Coach. Remember: just because online learning is largely independent doesn’t mean that you as an online student are on your own or alone.

Online learning may help some students balance work, family and education by providing greater flexibility in when and where coursework is completed. Academic success still depends on effective time management, planning ahead, meeting deadlines and actively participating in coursework.

What skills can students develop through online coursework?

But what exactly are reputable sources, where can you find them, and why are they so important? Knowing how to find reliable sources for research can help you evaluate credibility, accuracy, authorship and evidence before using information in academic writing.1

What Qualifies as a Reputable Source?

Reputable sources are articles, books, videos or other types of content that are considered current and reliable. This means a source should meet certain criteria:

The material should be up to date and verifiable.

The writing should have a clear purpose, and any potential bias or point of view should be identified and considered.

The source should clearly identify its author or publishing organization, their credentials to support their knowledge on the topic, and when appropriate, include supporting sources or references.

The content should demonstrate appropriate editorial, scholarly or fact-checking standards, depending on the type of source.

Why Is It Important to Use Credible Sources?

Credible sources are the cornerstone of well-researched academic work because they can add authority to your arguments and ideas. Using them appropriately also allows readers to locate the original sources if they want to learn more or verify the information.

Whether you're completing a class assignment or conducting research for another purpose, using credible sources can help strengthen the quality of your work.

How Can You Determine If a Source Is Reliable?

There are several ways to evaluate whether a source is reliable:

Research the author. Note their qualifications, previous publications and affiliations to help determine whether they have relevant expertise.

If you're reviewing an academic paper, examine the methodology to understand how the research was conducted and whether the methods are clearly explained.

Check the publication date to determine whether the material is current for your topic.

Consider whether the author or publisher may have any conflicts of interest or perspectives that could influence the information presented.

Compare the information with other reputable sources to see whether the findings or conclusions are supported elsewhere.

Examples of Reliable Sources

Established news organizations with editorial standards.

Textbooks or other scholarly books published by respected academic or professional publishers.

Professional organizations, government agencies and educational institutions.

Government websites, typically ending in .gov, when appropriate for your research topic.

Examples of Sources That May Require Additional Evaluation

Social media posts that do not cite supporting evidence.

Opinion blogs or advertisements designed to resemble news stories.

Websites that do not identify their sources or provide information that can be independently verified.

Company websites, particularly when evaluating claims about their own products or services.

Online University Libraries

If you are a student looking for credible sources, your university's online library is often a great place to start. Libraries provide access to a wide range of online resources, as well as tutorials on how to find and use them.

Many university libraries offer access to academic databases, which may include scholarly journals, research articles, reports and other publications. These resources can make it easier to locate authoritative information than using a general web search alone. Examples of academic databases include EBSCO, ProQuest and CQ Researcher.

In Conclusion

Learning to distinguish between reliable and less reliable information is an important research skill. With so much information available online, evaluating sources carefully can help you make informed decisions about the information you use in academic work and other research.

FAQ

What makes a source reliable for academic research?

A source may be useful for academic research when it is credible, accurate, relevant, current for the topic, supported by evidence, and written or published by a source with relevant authority or expertise. Source evaluation often includes reviewing the author, publisher, purpose, date, citations and research methodology.1

How can you determine if a source is credible and trustworthy?

You can evaluate a source's credibility by checking who created the information, what evidence supports it, whether the information is current, whether the source has a clear purpose and whether other reliable sources support the same claim.

What are the differences between primary and secondary sources?

Primary sources provide direct evidence, firsthand information or original materials related to a topic. Secondary sources interpret, analyze, summarize or discuss primary sources. Both can be useful, depending on the purpose of the research.2

Peer-reviewed articles are often considered scholarly sources because they undergo a rigorous review process by peers and typically include revisions before publication. This process can help support research credibility, although students should still evaluate each article's evidence, methods and relevance.3

Students can often find scholarly sources through university library databases, academic journals, peer-reviewed articles and institutional library resources. Library databases can help students search for authoritative sources in a more targeted way than a general web search.

Maybe you're trying to update your resume? Studying and working remotely as an adult can be challenging and stressful. Temptations and distractions at home are to be expected, and maybe your go-to coffee shops are overcrowded and too packed to be productive.

Making time to study for your online education can be a lonely endeavor, but it doesn't have to be. Don't be afraid to think outside of the coffee shop! Pack up your belongings and explore alternative places to study or work remotely for your online schooling.

1. Museums

Can you think of a better place to foster creative inspiration? Many big cities feature an art or science museum; usually complete with a bakery, restaurant, or public seating area. Some may offer free Wi-Fi, although some may require a paid admission. Others may offer free entry, as long as you’re willing to pay for parking. Look up entry information ahead of time to avoid being distracted or flustered upon arrival—your ability to focus should be a top priority. Need a study break? Take a quick stroll through some of the different exhibits and see what new ideas come to you.

2. Hotel Lobbies

Trendy hotels can offer cool and unique spaces to study and work. During the week, hotel lobbies or front rooms with fireplaces may be deserted, making them an ideal environment to catch up on online assignments, engage in online discussions, or make networking phone calls. Hotels may offer Wi-Fi; however, you may need to ask the concierge or front desk for the password. Utilize hotel business centers for printing or faxing, or work from the lobby coffee shop (if available). It’s a fun and inexpensive way to try something new, while still being proactive in your studies.

3. Public or University Libraries

If you’re craving a quiet environment, a library has you covered. Typically free of phone chatter, local or university libraries have study environments that can help facilitate quiet focus. Libraries may offer free Wi-Fi, detached study rooms, a bounty of books and digital articles, spacious and comfortable seating areas, and a lot of tables to work from.

4. Bookstore

Studying in a public space may not be for everyone, but do your research ahead of time and be intentional about where you set-up shop and study best. Bookstores offer access to a plethora of information, with tons of books and magazines right at your fingertips. Also, most offer a cafe of some kind, so you can grab a snack or coffee to give your brain a boost.

5. Anywhere Outside

Feeling cooped up and need some fresh air? Whether it’s your back patio, your city’s botanical gardens, or a park nearby – nature does the body and mind good. If you need Wi-Fi and have the capabilities, try to use a hotspot from your cellphone for access. Otherwise, take the opportunity to disconnect, brainstorm ideas, or do some light reading.

6. Co-Working Spaces

People can now work remotely from anywhere across the globe. A co-working office is a shared office space where you can rent a desk or workspace with other students or freelancers. They generally provide access to shared communal spaces, such as meeting or study rooms, lounges, and kitchen areas. Investigate to see if it’s a right fit for you as prices vary depending on the space.

Think of your must-haves and work from there! Do you prefer quiet to some background noise? Do you need access to Wi-Fi? Maybe you don’t trust yourself around pastries, so you’d prefer a place that doesn’t serve food? Check in with your community and ask fellow students, family, or friends where they like to study or get work done. Keep your options open and experiment with different places to see where you study best.

FAQ

The best places to study are those that fit your needs for focus, reliable Wi-Fi, comfortable seating and fewer distractions. Libraries, bookstores, museums, hotel lobbies, outdoor spaces and co-working spaces can all be effective options depending on the type of work you need to complete.

Your study environment can influence how easily you stay focused on your work. Choosing a space with fewer distractions, adequate lighting, reliable internet access when needed and a comfortable workspace may help you stay engaged and make the most of your study time.

It depends on your study preferences and the task at hand. Libraries may be a better choice when you need a quiet environment with minimal interruptions, while coffee shops may work well for students who prefer some background activity. The right environment is the one that helps you stay focused and productive.

June 9, 2025Success Tips

College is an investment both of time and of money. But what if
you could reduce your time-to-degree and costs by receiving college credit
toward your degree program for experience you already have? At Colorado
Technical University (CTU), we understand that not all learning takes place in
the classroom, and that's why we offer several potential ways to earn college
credit for prior life and work experience.

Finding out whether you are eligible to receive college credit
toward your chosen degree program all starts with an assessment of any
potential credit, which is completed by our Registrar Evaluation Services (RES).

Review by Registrar Evaluation Services (RES)

CTU students may earn transfer credit through completion of advanced
standing options that satisfy the established criteria for credential awarding in
other words, it may be possible for CTU students to receive credit for prior
learning or experience based on the outcome of a review conducted by Registrar
Evaluation Services (RES). During the review, a Registrar Evaluation Services
Specialist (RESS) will evaluate learning that has taken place outside of the
traditional academic setting (e.g., work or military experience) to determine
whether a student should be awarded proficiency credit through advanced
standing (PR credit) for that experience. While proficiency credit counts
toward fulfilling a degree program's credit requirements, a grade of PR is not
a grade in the traditional sense and therefore does not count toward a
student's GPA.

The RES evaluation looks beyond previously earned college credit at an
accredited postsecondary institution. In determining whether to award
proficiency credit based on prior learning or experience, RES may consider the following:

1. Course Challenge Examinations

2. Experiential Learning demonstrating subject matter mastery through
documented work experience

3. Military Credit for training or Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)

4. Professional Training/Certification credit

5. Standardized Assessment score results (AP, CLEP, DSST)

Once accepted to Colorado Technical University, students have the option to
pursue advanced standing requirements and degree-planning assistance. Once a student
submits the necessary official documentation to the RESS, they will conduct
a review to determine eligibility for advanced standing credit. All documentation must
meet the established assessment guidelines for transfer credit.

Ways to Earn College Credit for Work or Life Experience

CTU's Fast Track Program*

Experiential Learning

We at CTU realize that many students who pursue our undergraduate degree programs have life and work experience that may be relevant to their studies. Through our Fast Track program, it makes it possible for students to earn college credit for demonstrating their relevant experience.

Passing an exam makes it possible to skip that class while still receiving PR credit for it. Having to take fewer classes could translate into earning your degree faster and saving money.

Military Experience and Service

Prior learning can be acquired through military experience or service. To demonstrate understanding of course
content, servicemembers can submit documentation of their training and experience. The Experiential Learning
Portfolio (ELP) allows students to highlight experiences directly relevant to course objectives. The ELP should
include a narrative essay explaining how the military experience relates to course objectives, along with supporting documentation.

Professional Training and Certification

Active servicemembers, reservists and veterans may be eligible

credit for their military service or training. CTU uses the ACE Guide to
the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services in evaluating
military training and experience and may award college credit for comparable
lower-level courses or electives, including:

Military Training Course

Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)

College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP)

CLEP is a program that allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in specific subject areas by taking standardized tests. These tests can help students earn college credit for what they already know.

Professional Training and Certification

Another potential way to earn credit for work experience is by
submitting evidence of professional training or professional certification.
Professional training demonstrates learning that has taken place in a
traditional academic setting in a specific subject. In addition to training
programs/certifications that are recognized by the American Council on
Education (ACE), CTU may be willing to evaluate other types of documented
training (e.g., Continuing Education Units (CEUs)) to determine whether

Standardized Tests

makes it possible to receive proficiency credit (college credit) for prior
accomplishments.

Advanced Placement (AP)

At the undergraduate level, students may be eligible to receive proficiency credit for
relevant lower-level courses. Students must submit an official AP score report to the
Registrar Evaluation Services Specialist for an AP proficiency credit evaluation.

The College Board program makes it possible to earn credit for what you already know.
These standardized tests offer a potential way to "test out" of introductory
courses, which can reduce your total time to complete a degree. To be evaluated
for this proficiency credit award, a copy of an official CLEP score report must
be submitted. The RESS will determine whether a particular CLEP examination is
applicable to the student's chosen degree program. CLEP exams are currently
available in the following areas of study:

Business

English

Mathematics

Social Science

Physical Science

Applied Technology

Humanities

DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)

DSSTs
are college-subject tests originally designed by DANTES, a U.S. Department of
Defense agency, to help military members earn college credit for their military
experience. Nowadays, however, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests are available
to anyone both civilians and military service members interested in earning
credit by examination. Proficiency credit is awarded for passing scores
according to ACE recommendations for the respective lower-level course
requirements. A copy of an official DSST score report must be submitted in
order to be evaluated for this proficiency credit award.

Find Out Whether You May Be Eligible to Receive Credit for Work or Life Experience

Whether by passing a CTU Fast Track exam, demonstrating experiential
learning, having military experience, obtaining professional
training/certification or submitting standardized test scores, there are various
ways to potentially earn credit for prior learning or experience that can be
applied to your CTU degree program. If you're interested in taking advantage of
these programs and having your prior experience assessed, the first step is to reach
out to a member of the CTU Registrar Evaluation Services team or your Student
Success Coach (if you are a currently enrolled student).

* The ability to reduce time in school and/or reduce tuition towards the full cost of a degree
program depends on the number of CTU Fast Track™ exams successfully passed. Fast Track program
credits are non-transferable. Not all programs are eligible for possible 30% reduction in time
and money. Courses eligible are subject to change. Students should not rely on potential Fast
Track savings or eligibility when making an enrollment decision.

So youre interested in going back to school to earn a degree and are exploring your options. But how do you know whether a school youre interested in is reputable and meets rigorous standards of excellence? This is where university/college accreditation comes into play.

In this article, we discuss why accreditation is important as well as different types of accreditation for colleges and universities, namely, institutional accreditation and specialized/programmatic accreditation.

What Does Accredited College Mean?

A U.S. accredited college or university is one that has been evaluated by an Higher Education has met that agencys specific criteria for academic quality. Because it indicates that an institution meets certain educational standards, accreditation can lend legitimacy to the school that has achieved it. In this way, accreditation can help both students and potential employers feel confident that the student has received their education from a quality institution.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, accreditation functions to:

Assess the quality of academic programs at institutions of higher education;

Create a culture of continuous improvement of academic quality at postsecondary institutions and stimulate a general raising of standards among educational institutions; and

Involve faculty and staff comprehensively in institutional and programmatic evaluation and planning.1

How Does the College Accreditation Process Work?

In the United States, there is no centralized federal control over colleges and universities, and the level of state control over colleges and universities varies. This decentralized structure can lead to significant inconsistencies between institutions of higher learning in terms of character and quality. The practice of college accreditation arose to address these potential inconsistencies. Following passage of the Higher Education Act of 1965, Congress tasked accrediting agencies with ensuring the academic quality of educational institutions that received federal student aid funds. Since that time, accrediting agencies have adopted criteria and evaluation procedures to ensure that educational institutions or programs are meeting their quality standards.1

The Department of Education currently lists six primary accrediting activities, i.e., steps in the accreditation process:

Standards: The agency, in collaboration with educational institutions and/or programs, establishes standards.

Self-study: The institution or program seeking accreditation prepares an in-depth self-evaluation report that measures its performance against the standards established by the agency.

On-site evaluation: A team of peers selected by the agency reviews the institution or program on-site to determine first-hand if the applicant meets the established standards.

Decision and publication: Upon being satisfied that the applicant meets its standards, the accrediting agency grants accreditation or preaccreditation status and lists the institution or program in an official publication with other similarly accredited or preaccredited institutions or programs.

Monitoring: An accrediting agency monitors each accredited institution or program throughout the period of accreditation granted to verify that it continues to meet the accrediting agency's standards.

Reevaluation: The agency periodically reevaluates each institution or program that it accredits to ascertain whether continuation of its accredited or preaccredited status is warranted.1

What Are the Types of Accreditation for Colleges and Universities?

There are two basic types of accreditation for colleges and universities. There is institutional accreditation, which until 2020 was broken down into national accreditation or regional accreditation, and programmatic accreditation, also known as specialized accreditation.

Institutional Accreditation

Institutional accreditation applies to the entire educational institutionall of its programs, delivery methods and locations.2 As part of the accreditation process, the institutional accrediting agency, or institutional accreditor, evaluates a schools educational offerings, governance, operations and finances.2 Achieving university or college standards set by the accreditor.2

Page-break content and institutional accreditation indicates that each entity of a school contributes to the achievement of the schools objectives, though it does not necessarily indicate that all parts of the school offer the same quality level of education.3

Institutional accreditation is especially important because of the role it plays regarding federal financial assistance programs. Among other requirements, to qualify for federal student aid from the U.S. Department of Education, an educational institution must be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.4

Sidebar: Institutional Accreditation Replaces the National vs. Regional Accreditation Distinction

National accreditation and regional accreditation were the two types of institutional accreditation recognized by the Department of Education prior to its issuing of a Final Rule eliminating that distinction, which became effective July 1, 2020.5 Since then, the only accreditation distinction the Department recognizes is between institutional accreditation and programmatic accreditation.5

In a letter to state leaders, the Department explained the rationale behind its decision to no longer recognize the national vs. regional accreditation distinction. It noted that some states had been treating nationally and regionally accredited institutions and students differently, despite the fact that the Department of Education holds all accrediting agencies to the same standard.5 For example, prior to the rule change, transfer of credit determinations at public institutions [were] limited to students who attended regionally accredited institutions.5 The Department viewed such unequal treatment as unfounded.5 (Note that transfer-credit policies continue to be at the discretion of individual institutions. Students wishing to transfer are advised to always confirm a schools transfer-credit policies with the admissions office before making any major moves.)

Interestingly, while the Department of Education may not recognize a difference between national and regional accreditation/accreditors, accrediting bodies based on geographic scope continue to exist. For instance, as of the time of this writing, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation continues to maintain a list of regional accreditors.

Programmatic Accreditation

Programmatic, or specialized, accreditation applies to specific programs at a college or university. Programmatic accreditors conduct in-depth assessments of specialized or professional programs at educational institutions.2 Educational institutions seek this type of accreditation to enhance a programs quality and reputation or to meet specific licensing or hiring requirements set by state laws or employers, or both.2

CTUs Accredited Online Degree Programs

Colorado Technical University (CTU) holds institutional accreditation, and some programs are programmatically accredited.

CTU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE) and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (https://www.abet.org).

The business degree programs offered by CTU are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) (https://acbsp.org/).

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Post-Graduate APRN CertificateFamily Nurse Practitioner program, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree programs, are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (https://www.aacnnursing.org/ccne-accreditation).

Six of our bachelors- and masters-level degree programs are accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC) (https://www.pmi.org/global-accreditation-center/).

For a more complete listing of our accredited online degree programs, please visit our Accreditation Licensure page.

Why College Accreditation Matters

In sum, college accreditation is important because it:

Indicates a specific level of educational quality and academic rigor;

Impacts whether a student may qualify to receive federal financial aid and;

May matter to employers who want to ensure that a candidate has graduated from a reputable institution.

When you pursue a degree, you are making a choice to invest in yourself. Like any investment, you should do your due diligence before making any commitments. Ensuring that your institution or online degree program is accredited is an important first step on your educational journey.

Dream. Do.”, is about taking risks, believing in possibilities, and boldly moving forward. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that Bob Mackey will serve as the keynote speaker at this year’s ceremony. Mackey’s extraordinary life story and unwavering commitment to service make him the perfect embodiment of the theme.

A nationally recognized youth advocate, entrepreneur, filmmaker, and Shark Tank success story, Bob Mackey has led a life that is truly inspiring. Raised in Center, Georgia, Bob faced academic and personal struggles early on. Yet, he defied the odds, becoming the first in his family to earn a college degree, later building a career that spans youth development, criminal justice, television production, and business success.

Bob attributes this success to intention and ability. “The human mind has so much potential,” he says. “What a person can accomplish when they’re intentional with their abilities, that’s amazing. That inspires me.”

Mackey’s professional path is marked by impact and innovation. After working nearly a decade as a juvenile probation officer, he became a transformative leader for the Boys & Girls Clubs in North Central Georgia and Metro Atlanta. Under his leadership, graduation rates rose while juvenile delinquency dropped, and his legacy is honored with a teen center and gymnasium bearing his name. He’s also the co-creator of the Yono Clip, a product that secured a deal with Daymond John on ABC’s Shark Tank, proving his ability to turn bold ideas into reality.

More recently, Bob has drawn national attention for Oscarville: The Television Series—Below the Surface, a historical storytelling project that explores the troubling history of a town near where he grew up. “Doing the research shed light on things I’d always wondered about as a child,” explains Mackey. “Why there were certain places we just wouldn’t go. I remember when we would play football against a school in a particular area, none of the Black kids would go on that day. As I investigated, I realized how much unrecorded history there was, and I knew it was a story I had to tell.”

With Bob’s natural storytelling ability, CTU graduates can expect him to speak about failure, persistence, and hope, using his trademark blend of humor, truth, and motivation.

So, what does “Dare. Dream. Do.” mean to Bob Mackey?

“It means to go for it. When we waste time not going for it, we're ignoring what’s in us and robbing ourselves of what could be.”

CTU’s commencement ceremony will be taking place in Loveland, Colorado on June 28, 2025.

For the 11th consecutive year, CTU® has been recognized among the Best Online Bachelor's Programs and Best Online Bachelor's Programs for Veterans, with improved rankings on both lists from the previous year. In addition, CTU is proud to announce that they have, for the first time, ranked in the category of Best Online Master's in Nursing Programs for Veterans.1

"From the very beginning, CTU has been dedicated to offering quality, industry-focused education to a wide range of students," says Elise Baskel, University President. "Our consistent ranking on this list is a testament to our ongoing efforts and a clear reflection that we are successfully meeting the goals we’ve set for our institution."

The U.S. News Best Online Programs lists are designed for individuals looking to complete or further their education.
CTU's online degree programs are specifically tailored for nontraditional students who balance work and family commitments while seeking to advance in their educational journeys.

In total, CTU has been named in 9 categories:1

Each November, Military Times magazine announces their “Best for Vets: Colleges” rankings, and CTU is honored to be among the schools listed for 2024! Based on an objective and independent analysis, colleges and universities are rated on their ability to meet the needs of service members, veterans, and their families.

This is the 9th time CTU has been named on this list.

The purpose of these rankings is to ensure that service members have access to unbiased information when choosing an educational institution. To produce them, Military Times provides universities with a comprehensive survey detailing services and programs available to students involved with the military. The data from this questionnaire is then combined with other factors such as student completion, retention, and GPA.1

A Military-Centric University

Since its founding by a veteran in 1965, CTU has proudly supported those with ties to the military. As of December 31st, 2023, our full tuition CTU Patriot Scholarship has been awarded to 800 active-duty service members, veterans, and caregivers.2

In addition, we offer a reduced tuition rate for active service members and their spouses. Students can also use education benefits such as the GI Bill® toward degree programs, and they may take advantage of our leave of absence policy which allows them to take time off for deployment.

"Receiving this recognition is a true point of pride for us," said University President Elise Baskel. "Supporting our veterans and ensuring they have access to a quality education remains at the core of our mission. We sincerely thank Military Times for this esteemed honor."
