EMPLOYER: Colorado Technical University
JOB TITLE: Adjunct Faculty, General Education
Our adaptive learning technology provides one-on-one tailored instruction for the needs of each student at that moment in time. It is as if every instructor has a class of one.
I'M IN AND NOW I'm helping students explore possibilities and opportunities they never knew existed.
Describe your educational and professional background.
I didn’t go to college right out of high school. I chose to serve in the US military as a journalist. I am proud of my service, but I know firsthand how difficult it is being a nontraditional student. After the Navy, I was a 35-year-old freshman at the University of Iowa and I lived in the dorms. Talk about an awkward situation. My higher education academic emphases have been English composition and American history. Among my graduate degrees is an education master’s from Vanderbilt, where many of the educational theories were developed that are in play in my classroom today.
How do you use this experience to help CTU students achieve their goals?
I work hard to help folks get back into the discipline of school while working full-time. I tell my students that the sacrifices they are making now will pay off. In the job market I have seen a lack of strong communication skills hold up too many careers. I know my students’ goals and know that together we can reach them.
What impresses you most about CTU students?
Our students are drawn from every location, all ages, and from diverse backgrounds. This unique blend of voices makes for classroom discussions and projects that lead to new ideas, innovations, and changed lives.
