Learning new programming languages is one of the most important skills that any computer science or Information Technology student has to master. For many students, studying solely via textbook is challenging and time consuming. Studying through textbooks alone is also typically inadequate at teaching the complicated scientific concepts used in computer programming. A collaborative teaching environment called Code Camp may be one of the most effective methods for learning innovative new computer programming concepts.
As in many other facets of American life, professionals working in the homeland security field must be greatly aware of cultural, ethnic, religious and other types of diversity. Homeland security comprises a range of fields including law enforcement, emergency services, public health, transportation and border security, critical infrastructure protection and more. Consequently, there are countless examples of the need for both understanding and cooperating with diverse populations in the execution of homeland security policies.
Ethics and diversity are two major dynamics that influence the environment of modern organizations. Diversity is present when there is a mixture of differences in age, religion, culture, gender, ethnicity, education and more amongst a group of people within the same environment.
Understanding the differences of these key quality management elements helps you more clearly communicate the status of your project with team members. When you know and document these terms accurately in your project plan, you’ll all be on the same page.
Google Glass is a smartphone product that you wear on your head as you would a pair of glasses. Just as you’ve seen in futuristic movies, a display shows your view of information and images. It has a video camera that you command by voice to record what you see, take a snapshot or both. You can stream the video you take or share photos in near real-time. With built-in wireless and GPS, you can display onscreen everything you would expect to access on your mobile computer. An army of developers has already created the Explorer Edition and is now busy making apps specifically for Glass.
One of my graduate students recently asked about my principles for effective, successful leadership. I had to think about this and reflect. What seemed like a simple task became an exercise in putting together a list of what I’ve learned over the past 30 years of my career. Any leadership list starts with defining your values as a leader and compiling lessons learned from valuable experience.
I’m often asked, “What does it take to be a cop?” I don’t always have a complete answer to offer, mostly because my response has changed over the years. Of course, I could give you the basics: how many many push-ups you have to do, how quickly you must run a mile and a half and how you can’t ever have used narcotics or hard drugs. But you could find all this basic information with a quick scan of the agency website that you’re interested in joining. So maybe reading about my law enforcement career will give you insight into what it takes to be a cop.
Today, cloud computing is one of the most cost effective ways of managing enterprises and web applications. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explains that cloud computing enables "…on-demand network access to a shared pool of networks, servers, storage, applications and services that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” It’s convenient and efficient technology, for sure.
The French military intervention in Mali in late January 2013 against Islamist militants and their allies succeeded, for the present, in preventing these groups from overrunning the capital, Bamako. They subsequently drove them out of most of the north of the country including the cities of Timbuktu and Gao. Conflicts in the African continent are, of course, not new and most of them do not result in foreign military intervention.

The Information Technology (IT) function has become increasingly important to overall decision-making and strategy implementation in businesses. That’s not surprising when you consider how technology drives competitive advantage. Innovation enables businesses to stay ahead of the competition, delivering and satisfying more customers more effectively and efficiently. Further, IT is now an important revenue generator as an increasing share of consumer sales are transacted through mobile and online channels.
On February 14, 2013, Dr. Ingo Böbel spoke as part of the CTU Distinguished Lecturer Series. A published author and scholar, Dr. Böbel has had a profound impact on industrial organization research and shared his insight into the economic theory of creating shared value, also known as CSV. Here are a few of the key takeaways from his lecture.
Under her first four years as DHS secretary, Napolitano oversaw the broadening of the focus of homeland security. Focus went from a primary interest in terrorism and counterterrorism to coping with threats such as natural disasters and allocating resources based on an assessment of risks and vulnerabilities. In providing examples in the use of risk-based methodologies, the secretary pointed to the issues of terrorism, border security, immigration enforcement, cybersecurity, and disaster preparedness and response, suggesting that she views these as priority areas for her second term.
