A JD, DM or a PhD - What's the Best Post-Graduate Degree for Your Career Path?

When I completed my doctorate, my dissertation chair congratulated me and joked that I could now use the title “doctor” to get dinner reservations. He warned that this could potentially cause a problem if there were a medical emergency requiring a different kind of doctor. While most people think of the medical profession, the title “doctor” may be used to reference anyone who graduates with a doctoral degree. Doctoral graduates represent a wide array of skill, knowledge and capabilities.

Holding Academic Leadership Accountable

Academic accountability is a hot topic in higher education today. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the ACE (American Council on Education) Chief Academic Officer workshop in St. Louis, Mo. and the Higher Learning Commission’s training for peer evaluators in St. Charles, Ill.

5 Elements of Effective Thinking: SAIR Conference Recap

The highlight of the conference was Professor Edward Burger’s keynote address entitled, “The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking.” A captivating speaker, Dr. Burger creatively outlined these five elements of effective—or innovative—thinking, which he linked to the four basic earthly elements which predate Socrates: Earth, Fire, Air, and Water.
