Understanding your benefits with MEBS
The benefits process is an important consideration for many college students. Your military branch or the Veteran's Administration (depending on the type of military benefits being sought) will be the ultimate decision-maker in determining and approving your maximum military education benefits.
When you are ready to apply for admission, it will be to your advantage to speak with one of CTU’s experienced Military Education Benefits Specialists. You should also meet with your Education Service Officer immediately and follow the three steps outlined below to ensure the process of applying for and receiving your benefits goes smoothly.
Helpful Steps for Active Duty
STEP 1 – Visit your Base Education Center and talk to an Education Service Officer (ESO).
Discuss why you want to attend college and which school you would like to attend. The ESO will give you the essential paperwork regarding your tuition assistance (TA) and advise you on your potential eligibility for the Active Duty Top-Up benefits, the GI Bill, and any other applicable military education benefits. This paperwork will need to be completed in a timely manner and faxed to your CTU Military Education Benefits Specialist. You will need to speak with your ESO to confirm what military education benefits for which you may qualify.
STEP 2 - After your application for admissions is complete, fill out the FAFSA application to determine your eligibility for other federal tuition resources.
The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is an online service through the U.S. Department of Education that determines your eligibility for state aid, private aid and other forms of federal financial aid. In order to complete the FAFSA, you must do the following:
- Log on to the FAFSA website, www.fafsa.ed.gov.
- Register for a PIN and fill out the FAFSA. You can do both on the same day. If you are registering for the PIN for the first time, it may take up to three business days to receive your PIN electronically, but it does not prevent you from completing the FAFSA.
- When you receive the PIN, just log on and open your saved FAFSA, sign with your PIN and resubmit for processing.
When filling out the FAFSA, you will need to input the Colorado Technical University School Code: E01038. This code will route the completed information to our MEBS department. The entire process takes about 30 minutes to complete.
STEP 3 - Contact CTU Military Education Benefits Specialist after you've completed your FAFSA.
Your Military Education Benefits Specialist, in conjunction with your ESO, will work with you to determine all military benefits for which you may be eligible.
Colorado Technical University's online degree programs have established reduced military tuition rates for Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard military personnel serving in the U.S. Armed Services and their eligible spouses. Spouses will be required to verify their military affiliation.
