Dr. Patrick W. Fitzgibbons has developed and instructed numerous undergraduate and graduate level courses both traditional classroom and online; including but not limited to the following: information technology, network technology, network design, network operations management, systems analysis and design, information assurance/network security, strategic integration of information technology, and applied research methodology. Supervised full time faculty members and staff in addition to several adjunct instructors, served as primary advisor for 100 undergraduate and 50 Master’s degree students. Served as primary thesis advisor/mentor for over 60 graduate students, and severed on several thesis/dissertation committees.
Dr. Fitzgibbons has served on various college-wide committees, including Academic Affairs, Graduate Council, Curriculum Committee, Assessment Commitment, Personnel Committee, and various faculty search committees. He has participated in College speaker's bureau program, and was appointed to the Cyber Security Education Task Force.
He routinely consults on a variety of applied research projects with Air Force Research Lab on network security, has coordinated diverse administrative activities as programs' department chair; he actively participated in securing over $20 million worth of industry equipment donations for use in various laboratories; he was primarily responsible for generating numerous fully endowed scholarships, designed and authored department newsletters and various recruitment pamphlets. He also assembled and chaired the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) Committee comprised of industry executives and senior managers.

Why are YOU IN?
I believe my best teaching is that of a constructivist approach, a balance between pedagogy and empowerment of students to learn. The end products resemble each other but empowerment persists when I am gone and when the details learned become outdated. I try to create a learning environment with an emphasis on developing critical thinking. Kenneth Clark tells us that "an enclosed world becomes a prison of the spirit." He speaks of stultifying the motivation for reaching beyond the present condition. And yet confronting the future and adaptive responses to both individual and collective needs of a class is a responsibility and its challenges are perhaps what sets those of us who engage in higher education apart from other vocations.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I consider myself to be a student centered instructor, one who is equally inclined to complement both teaching and learning - balancing the imposition and exposition of inquiry and attainment of knowledge by incorporating recent findings and discourse into discussions of current topics or asking students how they would revise their approaches in the light of new information. Much of this is intended to keep learning an open and enlightened process - to discourage the tendency to premature closure on meaning, an uncritical dedication relegated to merely the transmission of facts and opinions. It has over time occurred to me that there is another tangible dimension to education, possibly unavoidable when students and teachers share a sense of being near the boundaries of the yet unraveling aspects of their discipline. This is the place where freedom of inquiry is necessary for discovery to occur. In fact, discovery is at the root of all learning, originally institutionalized to train future leaders, and only disciplines taught in this spirit can serve our students successfully.
