LAPD officer Dr. Sunil Dutta, a Master’s in Homeland Security course developer and instructor at Colorado Technical University, recently published an op-ed for the Washington Post discussing the ongoing challenges police officers face in order to maintain public confidence. The issue of community-based policing is a critical topic for current and aspiring criminal justice professionals to consider – particularly in light of instances like those involving Officer Dorner.
The best leaders are also great visionaries. Being a visionary is not just about having great dreams. It’s about having the passion to transform those dreams into reality. That passion motivates others to follow leaders in accomplishing their vision. John Maxwell says, “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” What is the passion that will define your leadership in 2013?
In my 12 years as a writing instructor, I recognize the negative feelings people have toward writing. I see the anxiety students have at the thought of putting proverbial pen to paper. Some are even adamant that they’ll never need writing skills for their chosen profession. Yet it’s hard to dispute that we live in a time more dependent on writing than ever before. Ultimately, effective writing depends on how well you analyze and address your audience.
LinkedIn recommendations will never replace a traditional reference check, but they certainly can’t hurt. They can speak to your credibility, while giving your LinkedIn profile a boost. While recommendations are important, it’s important not to overdo it. Quantity matters less than quality in many cases.
