In the design of today’s complex products and systems, too much is at stake not to approach product and system development in a systematic manner. Commercial and government contractor companies simply cannot afford design processes that do not provide for detailed analysis of the requirements, requirements traceability, detailed documentation, modern design synthesis techniques and a thorough validation that the design meets specifications. In addition, designers and managers must observe accepted quality assurance standards and employ appropriate project management techniques to ensure that budget, schedule and quality requirements are met. All of these skills may eventually be obtained by years of experience on the job, but today’s companies cannot afford to wait! The answer is systems engineering education.
