What is an engineer? There are some terrific resources on the web (that I highly recommend) that describe the roles of an electrical engineer, computer engineer, software engineer, and systems engineer:

IEEE. Originally the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., IEEE (known today just by its letters) is the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology. As an engineering student, carrying at least 50% of a full time academic credit load in a CTU program, you are eligible to join IEEE under a student membership for an amazingly low annual rate. IEEE membership opens the door to the incredible knowledge resources available at IEEE, as well as career and employment information. For more info, see www.ieee.org.

ACM. Similar to IEEE, the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) exists to advance computing as a science and profession. As the world’s largest organization devoted to educational and scientific computing, ACM boasts an array of world-class journals, conferences, libraries, and active chapters. The student membership is a REAL bargain, and will plug you into some terrific resources. See www.acm.org for more information.

SWE. Aspire … Advance … Achieve. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the chief non-profit educational and service organization providing resources for women in the field of engineering. Since 1950, SWE has been providing support to women engineers and potential engineers through a myriad of activities, including local chapters, education and networking opportunities, conferences, journals, and career support. See http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org

INCOSE. The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) serves to advance the state of the practice in systems engineering in education, industry, and government. CTU Colorado Springs is a proud sponsor of the Front Range Chapter of INCOSE and has hosted a number of its meetings and seminars through the years. See www.incose.org for more information.

Dr J Online. This is an interesting and unique engineering source providing sample multimedia videos on engineering topics. These videos are provided by CTU Professor Dr. John Santiago (alias Dr J) who has a long-term project in providing multimedia e-books and will continue to produce new videos experimenting with new e-learning and web technologies. At his website, you'll also find links to other educational engineering resources and engineering blogs. In addition, if you're interested in being an engineer and entrepreneur, you'll also find internet marketing resources. For more information, visit: http://www.FreedomUniversity.TV. Professor Santiago's engineering videos are also posted at: http://www.YouTube.com/drjctu.

Open Courseware. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a variety of videos and documents made available to the general public at their website. For electrical and computer engineering resources, go to: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/av/#ElectricalEngineeringandComputerScience

Discover Engineering. All ages will find this cool site entertaining. Its www.discoverengineering.org and it’s sponsored by some top companies that I know you’ve heard of – Boeing, Intel, Hitachi, Motorola. Lockheed-Martin, Bechtel, DuPont, and Symantec, to name a few. There’s even an engineering trivia question game!

CTU Library Resources. Becoming a CTU student opens up a world of educational resources through our web-based library. Check out http://library.colorado-tech.com to see what’s available. Some of the resources are available to you even if you’re not a student yet!

Sincerely,
