Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA): Concentration in Finance

The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) is designed for students interested in an opportunity to learn the knowledge, skills and confidence that may help them pursue the next level of professional opportunities within their chosen field. Colorado Technical University offers a concentration in Finance that has been designed to supplement fundamental business knowledge with a focus in finance, including financial accounting, capital and money markets, investments and risk assessment.

The role of the financial professional is more vital than ever. Organizations are increasingly confronting the need to invest in development and growth while ensuring the stringent balancing of organizational income and disbursements.

Today's finance industry requires professionals who possess not only solid business fundamentals but also an understanding of areas that influence business decisions, including financial statement preparation and analysis, risk and return, the time value of money, the valuation of stocks and bonds, cost of capital calculations and capital budgeting. Taught by instructors, many of whom have relevant knowledge regarding today's complex financial management industry, the BSBA with a concentration in Finance focuses on preparing you with a variety of practical competencies, creative leadership approaches, and the development of critical thinking skills.

Successful completion of the BSBA with a concentration in Finance can provide students with an applicable foundation of relevant qualifications, including how to:

  • Discuss and evaluate the ethical, economic, demographic, social and technological forces reshaping financial institutions, financial market and the financial system.
  • Analyze the ways in which monetary policy can influence a nation’s economic goals of achieving full employment, controlling inflation, sustaining adequate economic growth, and achieving a stable balance of payments position.

Concentration courses in this program are focused on providing an industry-current relevant overview of the accounting industry. For example:

  • In Financial Statement Analysis, students may receive and overview of financial statements and financial statement analysis, including an exploration of ration analysis, trend analysis, ethics and financial proformas.
  • In Money and Capital Markets, the financial system is examined to understand the roles played by consumers, businesses and government, particularly the Federal Reserve System.
  • In Risk Management, students may explore personal and corporate exposure to risk, as well as the tools used to manage risk. The management of organizations’ and individuals’ exposure to property damage and legal liability will also be covered.

  • In Financial Accounting, students may study the concepts and standards underlying the preparation and analysis of external reports by reviewing the elements, structure, interrelationships of financial statements and the tools necessary to understand and interpret them.
  • In Investments, students may be introduced to various investment vehicles such as stocks, bonds and commodities and explore the principles of security analysis and valuation.
  • In International Finance, students have the opportunity to focus on the workings of international financial markets, the risks of doing business in the international area and the management of exchange risk exposure.
