Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for surgical technologists is expected to grow by 24 percent through the year 2016 as the healthcare industry expands.* Employment opportunities in this field exist in inpatient or outpatient hospital operating rooms, surgical centers, labor and delivery departments, dental offices, private physicians' offices, dialysis centers, and medical supply distributors.

The Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology (AASST) degree program is designed to provide students with the appropriate general education, theory and hands-on skills to begin or enhance a career in surgical technology. This Surgical Technology degree program includes hands-on experience through clinical rotations in operating rooms at local areas hospitals through which students can receive over 500 hours of clinical experience.

  • Surgical Technologist
  • Medical Equipment Sales Representative
  • And many other related occupations

Surgical technologists may be employed in hospitals (mainly in operating and delivery rooms), offices of physicians or dentists who perform outpatient surgery, or ambulatory surgical centers. A few technologists, known as private scrubs, are employed directly by surgeons who have special surgical teams.*
