Associate of Science in Surgical Technology

As the volume of surgeries increases, our population ages and technology advances, opportunities in surgical technology in hospitals, physician offices and outpatient care centers are growing faster than most occupations*. To prepare for an entry level surgical position in this exciting and rapidly expanding field, consider an Associate of Science degree in Surgical Technology.

The mission of this program is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains and to help satisfy the need for surgical technologists in local and regional communities. The Associate of Science in Surgical Technology (ASST) program involves learning surgical procedures, exercising critical thinking skills and effectively communicating in the operating room environment. The surgical technologist is an active member of the surgical team. By using technology in the operating room suite, the student can learn the practical skills to successfully work in today’s fast-paced operating room.

  • Provide high quality patient care pre, intra, and post surgery
  • Participate as a competent team member working with surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating room nurses and other surgical personnel
  • Develop competency as a scrub second assist surgical technologist and circulator
  • Demonstrate expertise in maintaining a sterile field and assuring aseptic technique throughout the surgical procedure
  • Exhibit caring and ethical behavior
  • Communicate effectively and in a professional manner
  • Utilize critical thinking skills
  • Express enthusiasm and a sense of pride in team work
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical knowledge and a surgical conscience
  • Practice the role of patient advocate
  • Practice as an entry-level surgical technologist
  • Have the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue employment opportunities in operating and delivery rooms and surgery center settings
